This makes Ellen, or I think in this version she's Elaine, all the more determined of a character to marry for true love, namely Alan her father's court bard. ![]() Jennifer Roberson's duology portays her as Marian's best friend who likes to sleep around and annoy her father by wielding one of the few forms of power she has, that of sex, which evetually leads to her father trying to marry her off to simply anyone who will have her. Outlaws of Sherwood Forest by McKinley portrays her as a noblewoman different from Marian who has a harder time adjusting to greenwood life. But as one of the very few other women who potentially joins Robin's band, we know very little about her. Ellen is the wife of Alan a Dale in one of the most romantic of the Robin Hood ballads. Or Elinore or Nora or Nell or a ton of variations of the name, but most common are the first two. I really need to start checking them out. There seems to be quite a few historical fiction novels about Queen Eleanor in recent years. It doesn't surprise me the queen in Brave is also named Eleanor/Elinor, perhaps as a tribute to this great woman of history. Also in Hawksmaid by Lasky, Queen Eleanor has an important cameo where the ransom is concerned. She did historically get a divorce and marry for love after all. But once Marian and Robin are able to plead their case, the queen is moved to their side. And Marian's evil ex mother-in-law is determined to have Eleanor see things her way. In Elsa Watson's Maid Marian book Eleanor is something of an obsticle for Marian to overcome as the crown had the responsibility of marrying off young noblewomen if they were orphans. ![]() After all, those outlaws are collecting a ransom with their robbing to save one of her sons. The queen likes Robin and sometimes gets him out of hot water when things go to far. The mother of John and Richard is certainly an important figure in the Robin Hood legend. But before I sign off for a weekend of Brave and Korra, it's time to wrap this up with a few other women important to the legend of Robin Hood and some stand out new ones that have been added.
